Flea Market Finds #63: Minis, a Mascot, and a Movie

When: Saturday, May 3rd
Where:  De Anza Flea Market
What:  Vintage Baseball, a Bobble Head, and a DVD
How Much?:  $20

In terms of finding collectibles at the flea market, it was a pretty slow weekend.  Both of the ones I attended were full of vendors, but neither had anything that "wow" worthy.  It's either I've been spoiled and my standards are too high or maybe there's just more competition.  It's pretty common for me to see familiar faces who are also treasure hunting.

Anyways... here's the booty I grabbed last weekend...

Purchase #1:  1975 Topps Minis $7

They're in poor shape.  There aren't any superstars.  And a few of them are very badly miscut.

But they're '75 Topps minis... one of the coolest test issues of all-time.  They cost me around 7¢ each (ignore the price on the box).  And I needed a few singles for my Padres and Expos PC's.

In the end, the pro's outweighed the con's, so I purchased the lot.

Purchase #2:  2001 Stomper Bobble Head $10

This is one of those retail bobble heads produced by Alexander Global back in the early 2000's.  They were mass produced, but they're rock solid and hand painted.  I can't wait to add it to the Oakland A's shelf in my office.

Purchase #3:  The Pride of the Yankees DVD $3

One of my golden rules is to never spend more than $2 for a DVD, but every now and then I'm forced to break it.  This is one of my favorite sports movies and it's still sealed.  If you've never seen this movie and you're a fan of baseball... then you're totally missing out.  I'm not a fan of the New York Yankees, but ever since I saw this movie as a kid... I've admired The Iron Horse.

Okay... it's that time again.  Today's questions are...

1975 Topps Minis:  Love 'em? or Leave 'em?

How many bobble heads do you own?

Have you ever watched The Pride Of The Yankees?  Did you like it?

Please feel free to answer one, none, or some of the questions.  The number of responses to my questions these past few weeks have been amazingly awesome.  I hope you enjoy reading each other's answers as much as I am.  It's one of my favorite things about being a blogger.  Thank you to each and every one of you who have taken a few moments out of your daily lives to read and comment on these posts.

Happy Cinco de Mayo and sayonara!

Was there anything else on this post after you said you found '75 minis?

That, my friend, blows whatever else was in this post out of the ocean.

To me '75 minis are ok. I like the '75 set in general and I have the Orioles and a handful of other stars. The minis don't attract me any more than the standard size cards do.

I have a couple of dozen bobbleheads. I have about a dozen on a shelf in my home office and a few more up at work. The rest are buried in a box in my closet.

Pride of the Yankees is a wonderful movie. I love his parents, particularly his mother. She reminds me so much of my own grandmother who came here from Germany between the world wars. She never lost that heavy German accent. Rest her soul.

I don't know if it's possible to not love '75 minis.

Man that bobble head is so cute. Nice grab.

Currently I've got two bobble heads. An A-Rod bobble and a Cano bobble.

1. Leave 'em - not too crazy about some of the minis and these in particular would fall in that category.

2. I am a Bobble-head!!
(seriously, I don't have any bobble heads that I can think of?? I did get a couple from a Tides game once, but those have been passed on to Spankee as they fit his collection more than mine)

3. Never seen it, and will have to see if my local library has a copy...

I own a few bobble heads that I got at games - Mike Piazza, Tom Seaver, etc., but you hit a sore subject with me. I once owned a pair of beautiful vintage Mets bobbleheads from the 60's. One was the fairly standard one with the kids face and the other was the very rare catcher version. I loved these things, but ten years ago my girlfriend at the time thought that they were weird. When we moved in together, I didn't even pack these but put them wrapped in my backpack that I had my clothes in for our first night at the new place. My gf unpacked the car when we got there and literally threw everything up the stairs and then threw the bag into the apartment. Now, one could see this from the viewpoint of Pulp Fiction, if they meant so much to me, why didn't I take care of them. But I tend to look at this from the viewpoint of A Christmas Story....she totally broke them on purpose.

Love the mini's. Had one bobble head of Ortiz which I just passed on to my grandson. I do have a 58 Hartland Ted Williams statue. Never have seen the movie

I like the 75 mini's, don't think I'll ever complete the set but always appreciate when they come in trades. The only bobble heads I own are all from various games or giveaways. Never had the space to store a ton of them so don't collect them as much as cards.

The Lost Collector said...

I have 7 bobbleheads, even though I don't collect them: Otto the Orange, Paul O'Niell, Andy Dalton, Parrot Pirate, Jeter, Matsui, and Yogi.

I like 75 minis a lot more than today's minis.

I've seen the movie...of course I like it!!

I only have one baseball related bobble, a generic Cubs bear. I do have a number of Funko cartoon character "wobblers". Hey, there's a future post. I have a complete set of the mini's. They're ok. Yes, I have seen Pride. Gary Cooper was great. Love the parents too.

The 75 minis are fine, though I've never been nuts for 'em.

I've never owned a bobblehead.. and unless I get one in a free giveaway or something, I probably never will.

I haven't seen that film yet, but it's going into the Netflix queue right now, in your honor, Fuji!

I like the minis well enough. It fits the mid-70s well, though -- that is for sure.

Bobbleheads...well, I've got Ruud van Nistelrooy with Man Utd, Ronaldinho on Barca, Brett Favre, and a Yahoo! Pitcher bobble I got for winning a fantasy league once.

1. I like the 75 minis, because I think the 75 set design is a good one, and there weren't 100 different insert and parallel sets every year in those days.

2. I think I actually only have 1 bobblehead, which I bought at a garage sale rather cheaply - maybe $2 or even less. It's a Scott Rolen, and was originally a ballpark giveaway.

3. I haven't seen it, but it's one that's been on my long, long list of movies to see for awhile. I'm bad at whittling that list down, partially because it's all in my head.

I have a ton of bobbleheads. The Pirates had a lot of giveaways and I accumulated a nice collection by just going to games.

75 minis are pretty cool.

I love Pride of the Yankees and recommend it to my friends all the time. My Mom loves old movies so she introduced this to me at a young age knowing that I love baseball.

not a big fan of the minis or the 75 topps in general, but i do have the complete dodger team set in miniature form. i have four bobbleheads - steve garvey, vin scully, sandy koufax, and the dodger infield of garvey cey russell lopes. i will pick up another foursome bobblehead this season - garvey cey dusty baker and reggie smith - when it is given away at dodger stadium. i did see pride of the yankees a long time ago but i don't really recall any sort of reaction to it.

Don't know much about the 75 mini's. Being back into cards when I started the blog about a year, and a half ago. I still haven't decided if I will ever do a set from the 70's or earlier.

My bobblehead collection currently stands at 40 with atleast half being Mariners. I pick up any that I come across, but with Seattle the closest team they are the ones I come across the most.

While I hate the Yankees that movie has to be one of the all time favorites for me. Anytime I see it playing on television I can't help myself, but to watch it.

Great pick ups as always.

1-I like the '75 minis. I have some Yankees in my collection.

2-I LOVE Bobbleheads! I have 37 Yankees bobbleheads, 7 Jets bobbleheads, 2 Knicks, 8 Spider-Man, 8 Devils, 6 Mets, 4 Monkeees, and some other random baseball related bobbleheads. I am always looking for more. Would love to pick up a Roberto Clemente bobblehead one day.

3-Pride of The Yankees is one of my all time favorite movies. I saw if on the big screen last year. My best friend took me to see it as a birthday gift. Seeing it on the big screen was awesome and I fell in love with this wonderful film all over again.

1. I'm all for '75 minis, although I don't own any of them.

2. I don't know off hand. I know I have 2 - Bob Love from a Bulls game I went to, and Ryne Sandberg, which showed up one day at work; turns out my then boss gave it to me because he's a Sox fan and knew I was a Cubs fan.

3. Saw it on TV years ago, so I don't know how much was edited out.

Nice pick ups!

I like the '75 Minis...and have a post all ready to go when I get back to blogging.

I have a couple of bobbleheads and would get more if the opportunity presented itself.

I've never seen that one.

Nice finds Fuji. Love the 75 mini's, 29 bobbleheads, and I haven't seen Pride of the Yankees but it is on my list of things to do.

First off, I would say I like the '75 minis because all you crazy baseball collectors do and I enjoy hearing about your passions for it. In the hockey world, I love the 86/87 and 87/88 minis.

I have one Bobblehead and it was a Brodeur one made by Upper Deck

Lastly, I have never seen the Pride of the Yankees but it is high on my to-do list because The Babe plays himself and that interests me.

1: I like 'em. Don't collect them myself but minis in general are awesome.

2: Probably 30-40 on display, 3 signed that I need proper display cases for, and another 10+ still in their original boxes.

3: I have not watched it.

1. I don't have any 75 mini's but I wouldn't mind them.
2. I have 40 different Diamondbacks bobbleheads and a few other ones.
3. Love The Pride of the Yankees.

My first ever bobble head came in the mail yesterday. I've always thought they'd be kind of cool, but there haven't been many (besides Tony Gwynn) of players that I've really liked. And the Gwynn ones aren't cheap. I'll be posting about it soon, but it's one of my favorite Padres before he came to San Diego, and it was only $10 shipped, which I thought was pretty good.

I found one card (#316 Jackie Brown) off of your list... but it's in rough shape. If you want it as a filler until you get an upgrade, let me know and I'll ship it out.

Fuji said...

I highly recommend checking it out. It made me a fan of Gehrig from the first time I watched it..

Fuji said...

Man. That's horrible. I'll leave this comment with a moment of silence.

Fuji said...

I remember trying to buy a Hartland statue back in the 90's... but they were always out of my price range. Can't imagine how much they go for these days.

Fuji said...

You have a complete set of minis? I'm very envious.

Fuji said...

I can't make any promises... but I'd like to think you won't regret it.

Fuji said...

That Yahoo bobble sounds pretty cool.

Fuji said...

Lol... I can't stand the Yankees either... but that movie is awesome.

Fuji said...

Man... I love it when you blog about your bobbles. That's one heckuva collection.

Fuji said...

They had hockey minis? I've got to look into these.

Fuji said...

Wow. That's a lot of bobbles on display. Beats my 10 or so on my office shelves.

Fuji said...

That Cramer bobble sounds pretty awesome and very, very rare. I'm sure they go for a pretty penny online.

Fuji said...

Can't wait to see who it is.
