Cheap Cool Cards #37: 1998 UD Retro SOTT Bob Feller Autograph

Looking for an affordable, yet amazing stocking stuffer for a fellow cardboard collector?

Then I have just the thing for you.  It's a 1998 UD Retro "Sign of the Times" autographed card of MLB Hall of Famer Bob Feller.

Feller spent his entire 18 year career with the Cleveland Indians and during that time he won 266 games and struck out 2,581 batters.  He was an eight time American League all-star and was the 1940 Major League Player of the Year.

It's very likely that he would have been a member of the 300 win/3000K club , but he missed 3.5 seasons during his prime years, because he volunteered to serve his country in its time of need.

After the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941... Feller immediately joined the United States Navy.  He became the first professional athlete to enlist.  While stationed on the USS Alabama, he served as a gun captain for 34 months.

During that time, the USS Alabama won eight battle stars (nine overall), including one at the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot.

Okay... now that you've read a brief biography of Mr. Feller, I've got to ask you.

Isn't it crazy that you can pick up an on-card autograph of this World War II veteran and MLB HOFer for under $10?

Yes... I know he's one of the most prevalent signers in the history of professional sports.  But for the price of a discounted blaster box at Target, does it really matter?

In fact, if you're patient... you can find it for closer to $5.  I grabbed mine a few weeks ago for $6.99 (free shipping).

Did I really need another Feller autograph in my collection?  Probably not.  I own at least two other autographed cards, four or five 8x10 photos, and a signed baseball.  But if people are going to sell them for $7 shipped... I'M BUYING!

Happy Veterans Day!  Thank you to all of those who have served in the armed forces.

Cool! On-card autos of HOFers are always neat.

I think it's crazy that people are spending five hundred on autographs of guys like Mike Trout when you could probably find 10 to 20 Hall of Famers (with better signatures, too) for the same amount. I don't know, maybe the people shelling out the bucks for the young phenoms also have all the HOFers as well. Collectors aren't always rational (says the guy who has a box full of unopened fan packs).

I love collecting autographs, but I'll rarely spend more than $20 on a single signed card. And when I do... 99% of the time it'll be a hall of famer.

There are people that don't know what they have in their hands. Then they sell cards like that at that price. And then there are people with good eye like you that get the best business ;-)
I find it interesting, from a historical pov, your athlets that went to batle on ww2. Here at the time we were neutral so didn't have troops goingo into batle.

Bob Feller is also a fellow Iowan. They still have a museum dedicated to him in his hometown of Van Meter, Iowa, located about 12 miles west of Des Moines, the state capitol.

In all honesty... don't think the seller would have gotten much more for his Feller. Maybe $10? Feller signed a lot of autographs... which is nice because it keeps his signature affordable.

I've never been out to Iowa... but if I ever do, I'd definitely want to check out that museum. Thanks for sharing.
